What the Authority does

The National Biosafety Authority regulates the research, development, application, import, export, transit, contained use, release and placing on the market of genetically modified organisms in Zambia, to protect human and animal health, biodiversity and the environment.

  • Decide on applications

    We receive and decide on notifications and applications to import, export, transit, research, use or release genetically modified organisms.

  • Assess risk

    Every application undergoes a scientific risk assessment by the Scientific Advisory Committee before any decision is made.

  • Inspect and enforce

    Inspectors at ports of entry monitor products that may contain GMOs and act on anything brought in without authorisation.

  • Inform and connect

    We are Zambia's national focal point for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and share decisions through the Biosafety Clearing-House.

How an application is decided

  1. Application

    The applicant submits a notification or application with the required information.

  2. Public notice

    The application is made public so that anyone can submit comments.

  3. Risk assessment

    The Scientific Advisory Committee reviews the scientific, social, economic and environmental evidence.

  4. Decision

    The Authority issues its decision in writing, and may attach conditions.

  5. Monitoring

    Authorised activities are monitored and inspected for compliance with the Act.
